I’m a laid off professional in my early 40s. I very close to being accepted into a "career change" program in a neighboring state. The program involves a few months of intense daily training, then you usually get a job (no guarantee, but they have a very good placement record). It is far away enough to involve relocating.

I am currently on partial unemployment while doing p/t consulting. The consulting would end if/when I join this program as I would not have time for it (location wouldn’t matter as I do most of the consulting virtually).

I had a couple of questions that I hope someone out there knows:

1) Does the Federal government offer any grants to help pay for these programs and for your living expenses during that time.

2) Would I lose my unemployment compensation?

3) Would my state offer any grants to help pay for the career training? Or would they require it to occur in the same state? My current state is NY and I have tried to contact them about this but they are very bureaucratic and overwhelmed and their website wasn’t clear on it.
