How do I apply search engine optimization to my websites?
I have two websites, www.howland.ws and www.dennishowland.ws. How can I get them to show up on a Google web search? When I google these, no links are returned. I am new to internet marketing, so please excuse my ignorance.

The million dollar question, with many many answers. Here’s my strategy.
a) make sure your html is well formed. I.e. proper web syntax. I just ran it through the validator
http://validator.w3.org/ and http://www.howland.ws has 76 errors. It’s recommended to fix those, though admittedly a pain.
b) post links back to your site. Such as placing a question on yahoo answers which will then become a link. Try it sometime! ;)
c) Promote on social media sites like digg, reddit, stumbleupon, facebook, twitter.
d) Don’t quit, keep doing the above. My opinion is that b) placing links to your website it the most important. There are services that do this too, such as http://watermyblog.com/, or many many others.
I suggest you let a good SEO company do it for you. They have all the resources to get you ranking in Google and other major search engines quickly. I use a company called Flagship Marketing http://www.flagshipseo.com They are great! I used them to implement a link building campaign that got my site from a PR 0 to PR 2 really quickly and it will keep going up I’m sure. My site show’s up all over Google for a ton of different search terms. I highly suggest them.
If your site doesn’t appear in google that means that google hasn’t been able to find the site yet. The way google finds new sites is when existing sites link to them. What you need to do is to get an existing site to link to you as this will hopefully send you some traffic as well.
The way I usually get my sites first indexed (that’s what it’s called when it appears in google and yahoo) is to use a process called article marketing. It’s fairly easy and the basics of the system can be found at http://www.squidoo.com/article-marketing-making-your-articles-better if you follow that advice your pages will appear in no time.
If you just want to get google index you very fast, there are many methods. Eg. you can submit your sites to a few link before and it really let google index you very fast

If you want to have long term more quality index, of course there are many marketing effort you need to do and depends if you focus on organic free traffic or referral traffic. Yeah, forget, if you submit video to youtube and other major video sites like metacafe, it also index your site very fast.
