This is all down to negotiation.
The value of a patent depends on the revenue the company expects to make with the product using the patent and the importance of the patent for the product. Annual revenue can range from thousands to millions.
The value of software patents is a bit questionable. In Europe software patent have no standing. In the US, software patents do have standing, but a recent supreme court decision has increased the "obviousness" bar significantly and may foreshadow the invalidation of software patents in general.
I’m the "proud" (co)author of six software patents and patent applications. The company I work for uses them largely as protection. The patents have yet to make a single cent.
