Recently I was emailed about a potential job opening. They asked for my resume and the last 4 of my social security number and gave an out-of-state phone number.
Right away I was uncomfortable. The last 4 of my social is the default password for so many bills like cellphone, internet, electricity, credit card… pretty much every billing company asks for that before they’ll give any personal information. Someone could use that to shut off services, so my electricity or cellphone could turn off and it could take days for it to be restored, and I believe even my bank uses the last 4 of my social to verify me.
I googled the company and could find no information. I even went to their website but it was blank.
Is this normal? Do job candidates freely give out the last four of their social security number to anyone that asks?
"You shouldn’t use those last 4 as your passwords"
I don’t choose to use them, it’s what all businesses use to verify your identity. AT&T uses them, Verizon uses them, Sprint uses them, most banks, credit unions and credit cards use them, Comcast uses them, Cox Communications and Charter Communications uses them, etc.
I believe the thinking is no one should know your last 4 of your social security number but you.
