What are some new effective ways to market one's website?
I am an illustrator & cartoonist & I have been trying to generate hits & income from my clip art site. I’ve tried postcard mailings, craigslist postings, placing ads in publications, SEO (search engine optimization), email campaigns, business card dropoffs, etc, but with little effect. Any fresh ideas out there??

As the owner of a small fastener business, I can tell you that I might look at an illustrator to draw pictures of my products for my site.
I am sure there are thousands of other companies that may be interested too. Obviously it would depend on cost.
Maybe you could just search different websites and when you see those that are missing good pics, drop them an email with a couple relevant (protected) samples of your work. Give a ballpark figure on costs per drawing.
Also, have you made ANY sales? Your satisfied customers are your best bet to get leads. Call them up and ask if they will give a quick testimonial, make sure you get cross linking between your two websites and then ask if they know of any companies that could use your services.

This website is great for web advertising. It’s a free targeted advertising (based on you selecting various categories you would like to be included in) and link exchange network. You put other websites text ads on your page and yours appears on others. And it really is 100% free, forever. While it’s not something that guarantees traffic it also doesn’t cost anything, so why not try it?

Create a cartoon that is humorous or relevant to today and Stumble the page on Stumbleupon.com
You will get hundreds of visitors in very little time and at the same time expose your work to a untapped market. Do this once a week. Put an email newsletter sign up on the page and email those that join your list each week as the new cartoon has been released. Suggest a visit to your website to see more.
Best of all, it is free except for your time.
